  1. Compared to other Francescatti Biddulph reissues I own, Bach: Violin Concerto No. 2 in E; Partita No. 2 in D minor; Partita No. 3 in E and Zino Francescatti Plays Beethoven (see my reviews), this CD of Violin Sonatas left me cold. The violinist had a magical partnership with pianist Robert Casadesus, and while that is clearly evident at times here, the overall poor /5(4).

  5. If one is to believe the comments of renowned contemporaries, the premiere of Beethoven's "Kreutzer" Sonata in a Viennese concert hall must have been a highly risky venture. The ink was still wet on the manuscript when the English violin virtuoso George Bridgetower received his part only a few hours before the performance, and Beethoven partially improvised the piano part .

  8. Suffice to say this particular issue demonstrates all of the virtues of the "Essential Classics" series. This horribly (even criminally) inexpensive CD offers 3 Beethoven violin sonatas, rendered perfectly by Zino Francescatti and Robert Casadesus: #5 ("Spring"), #9, ("Kreutzer") and # 76 minutes of music in all, with decent sound to boot.5/5(4).
